As I sipped my coffee this morning, my son and husband were hunched over the New York Times. We all were discussing the deliberation of the Derek Chauvin trial. Soon we begin listing the recent cases of police brutality in our country.
As a priest I probably shouldn’t admit to this, but I know next to nothing about James and Philip, the two saints whom we honor today. To be fair, none of us can claim to know much about them either.
Today is the feast of Saint Philip and Saint James, apostles with ambiguous storylines and confusingly common names.
St. Philip and St. James are almost unknown people. Yet clearly they mattered to Jesus.
St. Philip and St. James remind us that ordinary people responding to Jesus Christ can change the course of human history – whether you celebrate them at home today or tomorrow.
I didn’t start celebrating saints days when my kids were little. But I can still start now.
